One of the easiest ways to get around in Beijing is by taxi. The starting price for a Beijing taxi ride is 10 RMB (within 3 kilometers). Don’t be surprised if the taxi asks you for a 3 RMB extra charge compared to the amount showed on the meter, as this is the government mandated petrol tax.

As the Beijing alleys (called hutongs) are usually too narrow for cars to pass through, many visitors choose to take tricycles for the sightseeing. The cost for these pedicabs is higher than a taxi in most occasions.

Beijing is one of the most important railway hubs of China. The main terminal, Beijing Railway Station, is located near Jianguomen. Trains from Beijing Railway Station are mainly launched for Northeast and East China. So if you want to go to such places as Shanghai, Jiangsu (Nanjing), Zhejiang (Hangzhou), Heilongjiang (Harbin), Jilin (Changchun), Liaoning (Shenyang), or Inner Mongolia, you should depart from here.

The Beijing Western Railway Station is located near Lianhuachi. Trains from Beijing Western Railway Station are mainly launched for Central China (Henan, Hubei, Hunan, Anhui), South China (Jiangxi, Fujian, Guangxi, Guangdong, Shenzhen), West China (Tibet, Sichuan, Shanxi, Shan'xi, Gansu, Qinghai).

Beijing Southern Railway Station is currently under construction, and trains launched from here are mostly slow trains.

Trains from Beijing Northern Railway are mainly suburban trains as well as those short distance trains to the Inner Mongolia and Hebei Province.

A bicycle is one of the easier transportation means in Beijing. The city is flat, and the bicycle lanes are wide. It takes a little time to get used to Beijing traffic but it is definitely one of the best options. Cycling is the best way to feel the real pulse of the city.
